Helpful Hints

Stories are plentiful and legendary about how some contractors lack the necessary skills, professionalism, or human resources to complete a job. Or how they began but never finished the job, yet disappeared with the homeowner's money.

Before selecting a contractor, homeowners can engage in preventive maintenance to prevent poor performance - and to safeguard their money. Arm yourself with these helpful hints.

  1. Establish a clear working relationship. If you don't understand the contractor, the contractor won't understand you. Communication is key to a successful project.
  2. Be clear about your contractor's policies and procedures.
  3. Make sure the contractor has the appropriate insurance and licenses for your project.
  4. Ask questions, then ask more questions. All questions are relevant and should be answered before you select a contractor.
  5. Express all expectations of the end result. This is an investment and you want it done right the first time.
  6. Get all pertinent information in writing. No verbal contracts!
  7. Be clear with the contractor on all project exclusions.
  8. Invest time in checking your contractor's references.
  9. Have your contractor clarify any inconveniences you will be subject to during your project.
  10. Be clear about all costs and any budget constraints, as well as the method of payment once you hire a contractor.

Following these guidelines will ensure a pleasant experience and will build a mutually beneficial relationship between you and your contractor.
